Which provider rules in Belgium?

Since september I manage the subscribers feedback of the Mania Gent site. After a month we had a total of 421 subscribers to the newsletter.

Yesterday the Mania Gent team decided to take the e-mail address off the site until the reopening and the clear-out sale is a fact.

Browsing through all the addresses there were several things that came to mind.

  • Which provider or web-based mail system rules in Belgium?
  • How many female subscribers are there?

Only one way to find out. Go through all subscriptions and start counting! This is the result of my little research.

To my surprise it is Hotmail that came out on top. A massive 33% of all reactions were from an Hotmail address, leaving other web-based providers behind with Gmail taking 13% and Yahoo only 3%. In total that is 49% for the web-based mail sites.

  • When subscribing to a news letter of a commercial site almost 50 percent of Belgians prefer to use a web-based mailbox. Is it because they use their ‘private’ mailbox only for family and friends? Or do they use their their web mailbox so they can check their mail on any computer with an internet connection?

It is interesting to see which Belgium provider rules. Telenet scored 15%, followed by Skynet with 8% and Scarlet with 3%. No traces of Tele2 or Clearwire though.

To round it up; mails from .BE domains gained 17%, while .COM domains made 6%, leaving Others (.FR,.NL, .NET and .EU) with 2%.

  • 25 percent of the subscribers used their own website or the website of their work.
  • With ’strange’ e-mail adresses you can never be sure, but at least 10% of the reactions were from females.

If there are other bloggers or webmasters from Belgium who researched this topic I will be pleased to hear from you.
