Good News For Music Lovers & Vinyl Junkies

The website from Music Mania is ‘alive’ again and it has a small explanation of what the future plans are.

The Mania, together with Charlies Records Fair, go for a temporary reopening of the shop. They hope to find the right balance between second hand and new releases (mainly vinyl). The shop is open every Thurday, Friday and Saturday between 11:30 and 18:30 until September 13, 2008. After this period they will decide if it is still possible to run a independent record store in Ghent.

This is what you can expect from the Mania New Style. Every week there is;

-a fresh selection of new releases in the Mania Style

-new stocks of second hand records from Charlies Records Fair

-further sales of the Mania stock, because you ain’t seen everything yet!

There is certainly a lot of vinyl in the shop now. The fresh stocks from Charlies Records Fair look very promising.

In the end it all comes down to the customers, so visit the shop and come back here and leave your comments.

Expect some fresh faces in the shop as Lorin and Karel will provide a lot of the goodies. I had the opportunity to look in some boxes of records and there were some serious good records in there.

Jools Holland has the C B Jeebees….

Top Gear from the BBC is one of the best programs on Belgium television at this moment. It is entertaining, adventurous and very funny. It becomes even more funny when Jools Holland (the guest from yesterday’s show) gets translated in the Dutch subtitles. Ever heard of “C B Jeebees”? Must be some nasty disease, no?

Melting Pot - Fela Kuti special

Every other week during the summer Melting Pot presents a special show, highlighting one artist or one subgenre or a city. Tonight (June 14) is the first ’special’. Tune in to Urgent FM at 19.00(cet) for an hour of music from the mighty Fela Kuti, the founder of afrobeat. Visit Melting Pot on podomatic for the podcast of this show.

My first encounter with Fela Kuti was in the mid-seventies. As a young punk I was intrigued by the funk of Parliament, Funkadelic and, of course, James Brown. But then I came across an album called Up Side Down by Fela Anikulapo Kuti & The Africa 70 on London Records. This record was something else. There were only two songs on it and the whole album lasted just half an hour but what a sound…. And that groove… From then on I was hooked on Fela and bought every record I could get my hands on.

Check the article in the Guardian if you want to find out more on Fela. Or view the excellent documentary below.

Music is the weapon, music is the thing of the future, music is the weapon of the future…
And something tells me I’m right, so I’m president… one day.. don’t worry….
