Call me old-fashioned, but I am not such a great fan of mp3 files. In my opinion the sound is not good enough.
But I do make exceptions when I sit behind my computer and visit some sites where you can learn something and can discover hidden gems.
What follows is the first of list of sides I often visit. So if you are into Soul and Funk pay these sites a visit and don’t blame me if it wastes several hours of your precious time!
Soul Sides is the weblog from Oliver Wang, who started in 2000, originally as a record review site. In 2004 he began to add audio files to his blog. Wang loves his funk, jazz and soul music and he knows a lot about hip-hop too.
He usually works like this. Wang takes a classic (or obscure) original and publishes it as an mp3. Then he adds snippets of two or more hiphop tracks in which the classic (or obscure) number is sampled in, so you can compare the results.
He also writes enthusiasticly about new reissues and compilations he likes. The mp3 files are available for a limited period, so you have to visit his site regularly.
Update. New posts in the best soul and funk audioblogs series has just been added here and here.
